We have always grown by listening to our community and asking questions. We honour the power of asking better questions, and we’re thrilled by the gathering of thoughts from ongoing conversations.
Today, our colleagues catch up with Cani Nair. Founder of Sniff Scentorium, Cani encourages everyone in the community to unlock the fullest potential and benefits of therapeutic- grade essential oils, by incorporating holistic products in their daily lives.
One of the greatest challenges we have at Revel is educating our
friends about the benefits of essential oils. Can you share a little on the
therapeutic benefits of essential oils?
Oh yes! This seems to be a common challenge faced by many as we feel that
Aromatherapy has only recently been steadily increasing in popularity, here in
Singapore. In fact, there are many people who are still unsure of the various ways
they can include aromatherapy in their daily routine.
If we go right down to the word itself, Aromatherapy – it basically translates into
using the aroma of essential oils as a therapy, for various conditions we may face.
In order to promote both physical and mental well-being, these essential oils are
commonly used in combinations, to improve the health of body, mind and spirit.
“Research has shown that the use of Aromatherapy may provide relief from pains, aches, burns, stress, depression and anxiety when used correctly.”CANI NAIR
A fun fact about Aromatherapy that many of us aren’t aware of is that many
ancient cultures have been using essential oils for thousands of years – Egypt,
China and India, to name a few. In recent years, Aromatherapy practitioners and
artisans have fine-tuned these ancient methods to better suit our evolving
environment and needs.
Essential oils are extracted from various parts of the plant and then distilled,
allowing only the purest extract to be collected for usage. These oils are then either
applied directly to the skin or inhaled for a sensorial experience. Since they are
pure, natural plant extracts, they are therefore totally safe for human usage. They
are commonly used in diffusers, inhalers, bath soaks and salts, face mists,
cosmetics, hot or cold compresses as well as facial masks.
Research has shown that the use of Aromatherapy may provide relief from pains,
aches, burns, stress, depression and anxiety when used correctly. They are also
known to alleviate sleep issues such as insomnia! There are many more
therapeutic benefits, some being researched on by experts, at this very moment.
How do Sniffy Sticks differ from regular inhaler sticks?
The inspiration for us when it came to the creation of our Sniffy Sticks is the
yearning for something pure and natural to inhale. In our local pharmacies, we
can find several brands with inhaler sticks in the market. After many years of
using these inhalers which are loaded with unnecessary and harmful compounds,
we decided to create our own inhalers. Our Sniffy Sticks are infused with only the
best, premium essential oils and are free from parabens, petrochemicals, sulfates
and preservatives. What you will inhale is only the pure and natural aroma of the
essential oils. There are currently six blends in the range, each blend catering to a
specific need a person may have.
Are essential oils safe for pets?
As with any plant-based product, we have to exercise caution when using essential
oils on or around our pets. Dogs seem to more tolerant of them than cats! The
common ones, which are also found in pet grooming products, are lavender,
chamomile, ginger, cedarwood and peppermint. These essential oils are also a
favourite with humans, so they are safe to be used. To be on the safe side, pet
owners should diffuse these oils around the home rather than apply them to their
pets’ fur or skin. A veterinarian would be the best person to advise on pet-safe
essential oils that can be safe for your pet’s topical application.

What’s your favourite blend? Why?
Wow, this is a tough one! I use all six, depending on my needs at that moment. If I
were forced to choose one, it would have to be ‘Breath of Fresh Air’ – a stimulating
blend of Eucalyptus, Peppermint and Lavender and Sweet Orange. It really gives
me a boost when my nasal passages feel stuffy and I am fatigued from wearing a
mask for hours. The eucalyptus and peppermint essential oils are minty and
invigorating; lavender soothes by improving my mood and sweet orange is a zesty
